The Death of Renée Good. An ICE Agent, Three Shots, and Words That Went Viral.

The Death of Renée Good — Minneapolis 2026

January 7, 2026, 9:37 AM. Portland Avenue South in Minneapolis — just a mile from where George Floyd died. 37-year-old Renée Nicole Macklin Good, a mother of three and a poet, dies in her own car during an intervention by Jonathan Ross, a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The case became one of the most widely discussed stories in the United States in the first weeks of 2026.

Two Versions — and Footage That Raises Questions

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and President Trump sided with the agent, stating he acted in self-defense and that the woman attempted to run him over. A DHS spokesperson described the incident as an "act of domestic terrorism."

Analysts from The New York Times and ABC News reviewed cellphone footage — including a recording from Agent Ross's own phone. The video shows Renée Good's car slowly moving forward and turning right. Ross, standing to the left of the vehicle, fires three shots. The woman is struck four times: in the chest, forearm, and head. The footage prompted widespread questions about whether the use of force was proportionate and justified.

"F*cking b*tch" and a Disputed Medical Response

After the shots are fired, the victim's car crashes into a parked vehicle and a lamppost. On the recording from the agent's phone, a male voice can be heard saying "fucking b*tch". NYT audio analysis points to the voice being Ross's — neither the agent nor his lawyers have publicly addressed this.

According to witness accounts, when a doctor runs to the scene and asks to check for a pulse, ICE agents do not allow him near the car. Doctor: "I'm a medical doctor!" Agent: "I don't care." Neither the police nor DHS have commented on this part of the incident.

Protests, Resignations, and Open Questions

The case sparked mass protests in dozens of U.S. cities. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared January 9 "Renée Good Day." The Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to open a civil rights investigation — in response, over a dozen federal prosecutors resigned. The State of Minnesota filed a lawsuit seeking access to evidence held by the FBI.

Criminal proceedings are ongoing. Agent Jonathan Ross has not been charged. The investigation continues.
